What is an energy calculation?
If you plan to build a new building, or build an extension, in most cases you need to supplement your building permit application with an energy calculation. The energy calculation is also called an energy balance calculation. This is a theoretical simulation of the expected energy consumption of the completed building over an average year. No later than two years after the building is put into use, the energy consumption must be confirmed via an energy declaration. An energy calculation may be needed for an ordinary villa as well as a holiday home or extension.

What is the difference between an energy calculation and an energy declaration?
The energy calculation is carried out when planning a new building in order to prove through calculations that it is expected to meet the current requirements for new construction. In addition, a calculation is performed for the finished building if the energy requirements are to be verified through this method.
The calculation needs to follow the Housing Authority's regulations and general advice to determine the building's energy use during normal use in a normal year, BEN. This step is not required if the calculation is only used to show that the building is expected to meet the energy requirements and verification is by measurement.
An energy declaration, on the other hand, is based on actual meter readings collected over a 12-month period (in any of the last three years). If there are no measurement values available during this period, an energy declaration can be drawn up with calculated values.
What is U-value and how is it calculated?
The U-value measures the heat losses through a building part. Striving for low U-values is important to ensure an energy-efficient and sustainable house for the future.
A U-value calculation ensures that the thermal insulation is sufficient, which contributes to high resident comfort and minimal energy consumption during the building's use. It is not as complex as a full energy balance calculation but requires information about the insulation in the climate shell and the windows.
Information needed to perform the U-value calculation includes:
Building permit drawings
The thickness of the insulation in the floor, walls and ceiling
Location and geographical position of the house
Uw values for windows and doors, including frame and sash, representing the entire structure
What is the difference between U-value calculation and energy calculation?
The U-value calculation is usually carried out during the planning and construction process to ensure that the building meets the national energy requirements and energy efficiency standards.
On the other hand, a complete energy calculation is required when you want to assess the total energy use of a building. This includes not only the insulation but also other factors such as heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting. Energy calculations are used to evaluate the overall energy performance of the building and to ensure that it meets national and international energy requirements and sustainability standards. Some projects only require U-value calculation and not energy calculation.

How does an energy calculation work?
An energy calculation for houses takes into account all the factors that affect the total energy consumption. U-values for windows and doors – u-value is a measure of energy performance where lower values indicate better insulation properties.
